Floating thermal power station launched in Mozambique

The power station installed on board a ship docked in Nacala was formally inaugurated Saturday by the presidents of Mozambique and Zambia, Filipe Nyusi and Edgar Lungu, respectively, the Mozambican press reported.

The MV Karadeniz Powership Irem Sultan, registered in Liberia, which docked at the port of Nacala on 18 February, is a power station owned and operated by Istanbul-based company Karadeniz PowerShip Co.

The first floating power plant to operate in Mozambique, where it will remain for two years, follows an agreement between the governments of Mozambique and Zambia, whose countries will benefit from the production, and the Turkish, which is responsible for the maintenance of the facility.

The electricity produced by the power plant will be injected into the grid of Mozambique’s state power company EdM from the Nacala substation, said the chairman of the state company, Mateus Magala.

The chairman of EdM also said that the center would provide electricity to the north of Mozambique with greater stability of the transmission system which currently has restrictions in view of the limited capacity of the Centre-North and to Zambia.

The inauguration of this project coincided with the three-day state visit to Mozambique that the President of Zambia concluded Saturday with a view to boosting two-way cooperation in various fields.
